Letter signed from James VI, King of Scotland, Aberdeen, to George Keith, Earl Marischal, Copenhagen, Denmark [manuscript], 1589 August 1.

Letter concerning negotiations for the marriage between James and Anne, second daughter of Frederick II, King of Denmark. James commends Keith, his Ambassador Extraordinary to Denmark, for his good service in negotiating the contract "quhilk [i.e. which] otherwaise in all appearance may have perishit to o[u]r dishonor and hazard of the amitie," and requests that as "all difficulteis that may delay it longer on our [par]te are now digested...Sa sone as the solo[m]pnitie ca[n] be perfytit," the Ambassador should return home with the bride "with sic expeditioun as winde & wether may [per]mitt."

James VI was born in Edinburgh Castle in 1566, the only son of Mary, Queen of Scots, and her second husband, Lord Darnley. As Mary was forced to abdicate shortly after his birth, he acceded to the Scottish throne as an infant and was brought up to be distanced from his mother. He was learned, taught by some of the best tutors available in the Scottish Humanist school, but also deeply superstitious, secretive and something of a misanthropist.
